Dentures
Have you lost most or all of your natural teeth? Has it become hard for you to eat properly? Ask Dr. Carol Halloran about dentures in Waterloo, Iowa. Dentures are an appliance made to replace missing teeth. This removable appliance is custom made for your jaw. Dentures can do the following for you and your smile:
- Make it easier to eat and speak
- Maintain the shape of your face
- Restore, and even improve, your smile
- Restore confidence
There are two types of dentures: complete and partial. Complete dentures are either immediate or conventional. A conventional denture is not made until after the remaining teeth have been removed from your mouth and your gums have begun to heal. Conventional dentures are usually ready to be placed eight to twelve weeks after the teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures are made before your remaining teeth are removed. Because of this, the patient does not have to be without teeth during the healing process. However, your bones and gums shrink and change during the healing process. More adjustments will have to be made for an immediate denture.
Partial dentures are used when one or more teeth remain in your upper or lower jaw. This type of denture uses the remaining teeth as an anchor. Partial dentures are sometimes removable and sometimes cemented in place.
